This is the personal blog page of Steve, the computer resource specialist at Bettie F. Williams in Virginia Beach. 2007-2008 marked his first year as a CRS. Before that, he spent 4 years teaching fourth grade at Luxford Elementary School in Virginia Beach. Prior to that, he was at Windsor Oaks Elementary School, teaching fourth grade.
Before Steve became a teacher, he served 23 years in the United States Navy, first as an aerographer’s mate (weatherman), and then as a Navy Journalist. He worked as a Navy journalist from 1985 until 2002, when he retired as a chief petty officer. In his role as a Navy journalist, he worked as a DJ, newspaper and magazine reporter and photographer, television reporter, movie reviewer, radio and television production manager, public affairs specialist, newpaper and magazine editor, and web designer and manager. He has worked for All Hands magazine and the Navy/Marine Corps News television program. He served aboard the aircraft carriers USS Saratoga and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, and was onboard the IKE when she steamed through the Suez Canal to the Red Sea at the beginning of Operation Desert Storm in 1990.
In 1994, when the U.S. military set up a presence in Haiti for Operation Uphold Democracy, Steve volunteered to serve at Cape Haitian, running the radio and TV station for the soldiers and Marine on the north side of the island, and worked there until the end of March 1995.
Steve spent the last five years of his military service working as the public affairs officer for Naval Air Reserve Norfolk in Virginia. The online magazine, The Rudder, won a second place CHINFO Merit Award in 2001 for best online publication.
Steve started teaching with Virginia Beach City Public Schools in 2002.
Steve is an active member of the Kempsville Church of Christ in Virginia Beach, where he serves as a deacon. He is also the ministry leader for the church’s multimedia program.
Steve has been married to his lovely bride, Karon, for more than 25 years. Their son, Kyle, is a recent graduate of Abilene Christian University in Texas. He is married to Kelly, and both work as music teachers in the Abilene Independent School District.
